If you have a broken lid lock how do you rig it to finish the load of clothes till new can be installed?

I am in the UK and I had a sciemens washing machine manufacured by Bosch which lasted 25 years never needed to be repaired except motor carbon brushes (newer machines generally use "induction" motors which have permanent magnets instead of carbon brushes so when the motor dies it can not be repaired) tlast week the motor commutator (which transfers electricity from the aforementioned carbon brushes to the windings ) finally failed (and faled with a loud pop and burning smell) so i replaced it with a bosch WGG2440XGB i had a look at miele washing machines but discovered they now only have a standard 2 year warranty (more expensive bosch machines have 5 years as standard while cheaper machines have 2) and their base models are more expensive than bosch as for hotpoint/Indesit(aka inde"shit") /beko/hoover/bush etc the majority of their machines might be "cheap" generally speaking the quality of the parts inside is also cheap (the "you get what you pay for" theory) and replacement parts expensive so are effectively "throw away" machines.

Totally disagree with his statements about ice maker. Without it you are buying ice all the time and half of it goes to waste. If you are buying a 10 lb bag of ice a week at $2.00. That equates to about $100/yr. or $1,000 over $10 years! I had LG that just crapped out and through door ice-maker was flawless for 12 years. That ice savings is nearly equal to 2/3 cost of new refridgerator and I believe my estimate is overly conservative especially if you have to go out of your way to pick-up a bag of ice. Filling ice trays is a joke as it is an inconvenient time waste and they take up valuable space with added risk of getting dumped in freezer if your not careful. I remember those crappy old days. If you live by yourself then surely you can do it that way but not with 2 or more people who like ice in their beverages.

I really wanted a French door style fridge. I had one in my previous house but the place I bought had a damnable top freezer fridge. I got so sick and tired of having to bend over and peeeeeer under the light and temp control fixture and of having just that one, unorganizable freezer box to bang my head on! I finally found one that I love. It’s not a French door but it has the freezer in a split drawer down below and it’s so handy to have what I mostly access right at waist to eye level. It cost less than $1000 AND fit through the door of my park model home and now THATS a find in itself! 😅

At my wife's request in 2012 we purchased a LG 25 cu ft french door refridgerator with door ice/water dispenser. The ONLY issue I had until yesterday was replacing the movable door seal which cost about $20. After over 12 years the compressor crapped out yesterday and I am totally bummed cause the thing was flawless and worked perfectly but I did notice more noise during the last month. This was also the absolute max capacity fridge that would fit our kitchen and the newer models are physically larger for same capacity and won't fit. Probably because they added insulation to comply with a stupid energy savings mandate that equates to negligible amount in annual energy savings. I am not a proponent of regulations but this throw away mentality perpetuated by the appliance industry needs to change as it is more environmentally irresponsible byfilling landfills with a bunch of plastic and foam. Then think about all the energy wasted hauling out old and new appliances along with food waste. Right now the efficiencies are so high that planned obsolescence is totally unnecessary. I wish someone like Elon Musk would get in the appliance business and change the dynamics of the industry. If a competitor started making more easily serviceable and readily available appliances that would last 20 years that are reliable and easy to service they could easily charge twice the price and I would pay. Then they would force the others to improve or go out of business. Now there is low cost sensing tech that could predict potential failures and the components could be replaced before catastrophic failure. Even redesigning the system to easily replace refrigeration components without need for labor intensive brazing would be easily done like in automotive industry.

Thanks for validating my purchase of the refrigerator that I just had delivered today. I bought the 13.9 cubic feet version of this refrigerator. It looks just the same except for size. I wished I had seen this video before I had bought the 10.1 cu. ft. Vissani that I had to return. The Vissani would get no colder than fluctuating between 45-48 degrees at its coldest setting. I took it back, and bought the Frigidaire at a different store. The Frigidaire fluctuates between 35 and 37 degrees in the recommended middle setting. I agree with you about the ice maker being just another thing that can go bad. My wife hates the stale ice cubes and prefers to just make a few or more at a time as needed using ice cube trays. The simpler, the better. There are separate temperature controllers for the two compartments.

I would like to know why is cost more to buy a fridge without a freezer?

Pressed & held switch 1 LED lights went off & would not come back on. Unplug unit & disconnecting control unit & reinstalled and still no LED lights light up when plugged back in. Replaced control board with a new one & LED lights came on UNTIL I learned I needed to hold light switch & switch 1 button at same time. Now I’m back in the same situation with no LED lights coming on & the compressor doesn’t even attempt to kick in. This is a standup freezer. WZF35X200DW01

The best you can do is buy on Visa and hope for the best. At least on Visa you can do a chargeback and get your money back. They’re all crooked in one way or another.

My dad sold Philco appliances in the 60's. We sold a beautiful side by side that immediately came back for being too hot regardless of setting. Into the warranty shop, they put temp sensors in it and hooked up a graphing machine that printed temp/run times over a 5 day period. They noticed that the internal temp would gradually start to rise as soon as the compressor shut down. They eventually replacing the compressor and Philco finally said to give the customer a new one. It sat in the back of the shop for a year until another tech decided to take another look. Turned out the door switch was bad and the bulb stayed on all the time when the door was shut.

Ben, we appreciate your efforts . . . We have a 37 year old Whirlpool ET20DK. It's still humming away. However, the coldest it can get is about 45F and runs continuously. I've cleaned the coils. Any DIY ideas, or are we facing buying a new refrigerator? If so, your unit looks good . . . are there any other, good, computer-less refrigerators you could recommend? Thanks, Bob

Top mount lol. I think you mean top freezer. I'm glad you didn't get the icemaker. That's all i hear all day long. Icemakers and gadgets are the weak point on all refrigerators. And fans on GE refrigerators. I like simple. You're still going to go through timers and heaters but less often and less money.

I've read that vinegar added to washing machines or dishwashers starts to corrode metal and deteriorate rubbers. My understanding is that citric acid is less aggressive than vinegar, so I will give Milliard a try. Thank you.

Ben, curious on what are your thoughts on bottom freezer fridges? I'm told that French Doors are less reliable compared to top freezers but I like having the fridge compartments on top since I don't use the freezer a lot. They don't seem as popular as other options but I hope you some experience with them.

does the relay need to be replaced or is it just due to a bad solder?? mine has the same exact solder looking pretty bad and im wondering if its just a bad connection? My oven works sometimes just fine and others it just clicks and clicks. Does this for both broil and bake.

Thank you. The fan and coils around the fan had an inch of dust. I used a toothbrush to remove all the dust with a vacuum cleaner. So far, my refrigerator has been running good for 7 hours.

Thank you so much. I didn't know any of this. I have a really crummy Samsung with the ice maker in the refridgerator. Whole refridgerator ices up. Contractor did not leave enough space between wall and refridgerator. Can"t pull it out to clean. Only 7 years old - has been a real pain!

I would love if all my appliances has the old mechanical thermostats, controls, not a damn piece of electronics to fry! In fact I have gone to getting decent shape old units from folks, fixing them up and keep using. This new stuff breaks not worth fixing and will break in only a few years.

Cleaning baked-on gunk from glass-tops: baking soda, toothpaste, and a little bit of water. Rub into the gunk, which will then rub off. Doesn't take long.
